NUS disgrace - Victory to the resistance

Netanyahu has described Blair as bravely standing up for his convictions on the Middle East. Remembering this is a man who leads Israeli semi-fascist Likund Party this is some praise. An accolade to be added to his close friendship with the (semi-fascist) Berlusconi and “Labour friendly” Rupert Murdoch – As my Granddad says you can judge a man from the company he keeps. Sadly this is now an accolade that can be extended to the NUS which has bravely stood up for “brave little Israeli” joining the worlds biggest military powers, the CIA, the British government and the Middle East’s only nuclear arsenal.

The NEC meeting last weak decided to reject even the semi-racist AWL’s motion on the crisis (a motion event he most blood thirsty B52 liberal would be happy with) in favour of a motion that condemned Hezbollah as racist and as equally to blame for the crisis as the IDF. To add insult to injury the NUS also refused to call for an immediate ceasefire instead lining up with George bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, people who think Israel has the right to destroy Lebanon until it decides to stop. The Independent’s front cover showing the flags of countries calling (and not calling) for an immediate ceasefire can now add the NUS’ logo to the box containing only the US, UK and Israeli flags.

After adding Insult to injury the NUS (not yet satisfied) decided to jump up and down on the head of the principle of internationalism it claim’s to hold dear. Yes not content with giving the green light to Israeli war crimes the NUS decided to go out of its way to attack the UK anti-war movement it supposedly supports. So instead of using its voice to urge the government to stop Israel’s policy of collective punishment (ie mass murder of innocents) it decided to write to the Respect Coalition about its support for the resistance to mass murder in Lebanon. Words can’t express the contemptible level Gemma Tumelty’s organised Independents and the National Organisation of Labour Students have sunk to.

Perhaps to continue the NUS’ long march to the right it should now support Israel’s land invasion of Lebanon. I wait with baited breath but until then in the real world the resistance continues to build in Manchester as it does across the Middle East,

So you ex-socialists now support fascism and ant-semitism: you are scum, if you understand, you are stupid, if you don't.? Learn a bit of history, "comrade".

P.S: And by the way; I think what Isreal is doing in lebanon is criminal, and have demonstrated and campaigned against it.

I agree they should have called for an immediate ceasfire but they have every right to call Hezbollah racist.

This crisis started by them commiting a terrorist action by kidnapping I think 2 Israeli soldiers.

How courageous of you to make such a comment. At least I actually listen to what other people say. Oh and the latest gem from the SWP is that we should oppose the UN force going in.

At 2:14 PM, Blogger Snowball said...

Why should the people of Lebanon accept foreign occupation by either the UN or Israel?

Kidnapping soldiers is not 'terrorism' if you are at war with that country as Hizbollah are - it is part of war.

If Hizbollah are racist then so are the leaders of Israel, who have wiped Palestine off the map of the world. The only difference is that the state of Israel has the enormous power of the American Empire behind it while Hizbollah has only the support of ordinary people across the Middle East.

At 12:02 AM, Blogger El Tom said...

yeah, dirty foreigners, wouldn't want them in your country, would yer?

I didn't say that kidnapping soldiers is terrorism, and as I have made clear, I think this is being used as an excuse by Israel to wipe out Hizbollah.... and take a load of innocent civvies down with them.

'The only difference is that the state of Israel has the enormous power of the American Empire behind it while Hizbollah has only the support of ordinary people across the Middle East.'

Precisely. there is little moral inequevalence. As far as I am concerned, being actions taken willingly against civillians, the current actions of the State of Israel are nothing more than state terrorism.

just a point, but Hezbollah has the support of than everyday people. it has Syrian Fascists and Iranian theocrats to help it out too.

Kidnapping soldiers is part of war. A war that should end. that's why I have always been in favour of an immediate, unconditional ceasefire by both sides, as well as an israeli withdrawal. Why do you think Israel would withdraw? There are no beefits for it doing so. So it needs a bit of Coercion, something It's military can't stop.

That's why we should have the UN in there, and if possible, involve Arab states in the force. I don't think the argument that 'these people are foreign so they should get out' is enough. what we are really argung about is whether the UN is impewrialist, so let's start by admitting that. I think it is too pluralistic and has too many competing national interests to be effectively imperialist. So i'm in favour of them being there, ASAP.

That does not mean I excuse Hezbollah for their civillian targetting, anti-worker tactics. It is however clear to me that Israels tactics are ten times worse.

let's put it this way, and use a tortured world war 2 era analogy:

If Mussolini was fighting hitler, you'd stick up for him by your current thinking.

I'd be against both of the bastards and not be afraid to say it.

At 3:13 PM, Blogger Snowball said...

You are comparing Hizbollah - a movement of national resistance to foreign occupation - to Mussolini - who invaded and occupied the African state of Abyssinia in 1935 on the pretext of bringing 'civilisation' to a 'primitive' people through poison gas and bombing?

FFS Get a grip man. The UN now is like the League of Nations was when Mussolini invaded Abyssinia - complicit in the imperialist invasion. When the UN finally does decide to try and stop the killing, it is only because otherwise Israel would be facing an embarrassing defeat in the region otherwise. Israel has failed to wipe out Hizbollah - its intended mission - and indeed is losing to them.

The UN will not bring peace as it is effectively controlled by the US and other Great Powers who together control the world. It is essentially a 'thieves kitchen' - to use Lenin's term - and will do nothing to stop Israeli's taking of South Lebanon just as it did nothing to stop America's taking of Iraq in 2003.

As long as Israel remains the US watchdog in the region there can and will be no peace. And this is even before we get onto the question of justice for the Palestinian people.

You mean a movement of Islamic resistance to foreign occupation?

I have no time for people who bring their religion to politics, save those that embrace secularism. I don't care if they are christians, Jews muslims or Charles Manson.

What is the point in fighting out US capitalism only to replace it with a capitalism that is even less democratic? Even less in favour of domestic human rights? That's not liberation, it's further enslavement, whether people are in favour of it or not.

I don't care if Hezbollah are popular, the people that stick up for them are lumpen.

Yes, that virulent movement against Jewish arthropods!

Here's what Wikipedia says about ants:

Bullet Ants (Genus Paraponera), located in Australia, are the most venomous insect. Stings are incredibly painful, though usually non-fatal.
Jack Jumpers, located in Australia, are quite deadly to a small number of people in the population, and cause hospitalizations each year.
The Masai of Africa had an abiding respect for the Siafu Ants, voracious predators that consume a large amount of insects and are welcomed for the benefit they bring to farmers, as they will eliminate all pests from a crop and quickly move on.
Some of the more advanced ants are the army ants and driver ants, from South America and Africa respectively. Unlike most species which have permanent nests, army and driver ants do not form permanent nests, but instead alternate between nomadic stages and stages where the workers form a temporary nest (bivouac) out of their own bodies. Colonies reproduce either through nuptial flights as described above, or by fission, where a group of workers simply dig a new hole and raise new queens. Colony members are distinguished by smell, and other intruders are usually attacked, with notable exceptions.
Some ants will raid the colonies of other ants, taking the pupae with them, which once hatched act as workers in the raider's colonies despite not being genetically related to the queen. A few species, such as the Amazon ants (e.g. Polyergus rufescens), have become utterly dependent on such slaves, to the point of being otherwise unable to feed themselves.
Some ants, called honeypot ants, have special workers called repletes who simply store food for the rest of the colony, generally becoming immobile with greatly enlarged abdomens. In hot, dry places, even deserts, in Africa, North America and Australia where they live, they are considered a great delicacy.
Weaver ants (Oecophylla) build nests in trees by attaching leaves together, first pulling them together with bridges of workers and then sewing them together by pressing silk-producing larvae against them in alternation.
Leafcutter ants (Atta and Acromyrmex) feed exclusively on a special fungus that lives only within their colonies. They continually collect leaves which they cut into tiny pieces for the fungus to grow on. These ants have several differently sized castes especially for cutting up the pieces they are supplied with into even smaller pieces. Leaf cutter ants are sensitive enough to adapt to the fungi's reaction to different plant material, apparently detecting chemical signals from the fungus. If a particular type of leaf is toxic to the fungus the colony will no longer collect it. The ants grow the fungus because it produces special structures called gongylidia which are fed on by the ants. They create antibiotics on their skin, and subsist entirely on this farming of the fungus.
Fire ants are unique by having a poison sac where the contents consists largely of piperidine alkaloids.
Silver ants navigate by using their eyes instead of pheromones to find their way back home.
Scientists recently discovered that Sahara desert ants have an internal pedometer that keeps tracks of how many steps they take, and use it to find their way back to the nest. [2]
Some ants are equipped with mandibles called trap-jaws. This snap-jaw mechanism, or catapult mechanism, is possible because energy is stored in the large closing muscles. The blow is incredibly fast, about 0.5 ms in the genus Mystrium. Before the strike, the mandibles opens wide and are locked in the open position by the labrum, which functions as a latch. The attack is triggered by stimulation of sensory hairs at the side of the mandibles. The mandibles are also able to function as a tool for more finely adjusted tasks. Two similar groups are Odontomachus and Dacetini - examples of convergent evolution.
Australian green ants are eaten by the aboriginals. Their abdomen tastes like lemon sherbet, are high in vitamin C and have antibiotic properties. Squashed green ants mashed in water makes up an excellent lemon-lime flavored drink. The Amazon is also said to have lemon ants.[3]
The Australian bulldog ant Myrmecia pilosula has only a single pair of chromosomes. Males have just one chromosome since they, like all male Hymenopterans, are haploid. The Australian bulldog ants are also among the biggest and most primitive. Each individual hunts alone, using its large eyes instead of their chemical senses to find prey. Like all ants they are social, but their social behavior is poorly developed compared to more advanced species.
Scientists recently discovered that Polyrhachis sokolova, a species of ant, can swim and live underwater.
Termites, sometimes called "white ants," are in fact not closely related to ants, though they have a somewhat similar social structure. They comprise the order Isoptera and are related to the cockroach.

You know precisely what I mean. I don't give a crap if someone's motivation for what they do politically is religious. That's not what I meant by the phrase. If Islam motivates people to have certain politics, fair enough. Same with christianity.

Damn my lazy phrasiology.

But what i don't agree with is indoctrination, educational apartheid and religous morality in the law. Actually, as far as I am concerned, save for the absolute fundamental basis of the social contract, morality in general should play no part in legislation, as it is intolerant of difference and conformist at the same time; in other words, inherently regressive. It flies against the ideas of both liberalism and socialism, as it is roundly irrational and based on conservatism.

Let your religion motivate you, just don't let it compel everyone else.

If you support Hezbollah and Hamas, that is precisely what you are asking for. Along with more capitalism, too, by the way.

I always thought ant-semitism was a sort of insectoid Ibrahimic thing, you know... common traits involve sterotypical beardage and excessive reliance on Fallaffels as a source of nutrition, while being able to lift ten times their own body weight and having exoskeletons...

not too many issues with the content of this post (a letter to the Respect coalition while Israel murders hundreds/thousands?! Christ alive.)

You might want to consider using your language a little more precisely mind. All that semi-fascist, semi-racist nonsense makes you sound idiotic.

Aside from which, the NUS is utterly moribund, representative of no serious forces and of no use to man nor beast. Their opinion on anything is happily irrelevant.

At 10:17 AM, Blogger Cliffite said...

Ah that is the problem with ranting generally but actually in all three cases there is a factual point to be made.

Both Likund (forming from Ur Gunn an Israeli fascist organisation) and Berlusconi (leading an incarnation of Mussolini's party and having unreformed fascists in his coalition) have parties that have evolved from fascist groupings.

The AWL are openly reactionary on the question of the Arab world and characterisation of Islam in general. Their uncritical adoption of enlightenment attitudes to islam and rejection of a material analyise of the resistance in the region leads them to objectively racist statements and positions.

You are however right my anarchist friend - the use of language was unfortunate and detracted from the point.
