UMSU elections results!

RESPECT and the left have for the second year running claimed key executive positions in our Student elections by a large margin. In what was traditionally a Labour Student Union for the left to have come through so strongly is remarkable. Unfortunately the turn out of the blocks Islamic soc/organised left vs Organised right/Jewish Soc was strongly against us and reflected in the loss of many student council positions. The independent left however turned out in force and ensured Cunningham, Skinner and Castro were in by a large margin and Shabnam, Haroon and Sohaib were safely elected to exec.

Campaigns:
Andy Cunningham (Respect) 1314 -----Elected
Adele Douglas (Students 1st/ CF) 1008

Communications:
Alex Castro (Latin American Soc/Respect) 1116 -----Elected
Robbie Gillet (Indy Green /Anarchist) 731
Matt Strong (NOLS/Students 1st) 711
(Castro wins off Strongs transfers by several hundred votes)

General Secretary:
Tom Skinner (Respect/Fair Trade) 1303 ------ Elected
Barney Guiton (Students 1st) 839
Jon Lewis (Indy) 434

Academic Affairs:
Vicky Araj (Respect) 1097 (after transfers)
Jeff Meddemmen (Independent)1184 (after Transfers)----Elected
Tom Miller 499 (Nols/Students 1st)

Paper Editor:
Dom Koole (students 1st) 1142 ------Elected
T Khan (Isoc) 845

Welfare:
Bev Craig (Indy/LGBT) 1377 ------Elected
Rubbia Ullah (Respect) 972

Student Activities:
Emily Randall (Indy) 1250 --------Elected
Anton Benson (Indy) 941

Womens:
Sommerville (Indy) 715 -----------Elected
Amy Pettitt (Respect) 520

Non Sabb Exec:
PostGrad - Asim ISoc
International - Lamia (Isoc/Respect)
Medical - Shabnam (Isoc)
Humanities - Haroon Ahmed (Isoc)
EPS - Sohaib (Isoc)
Life Sciences - Chris Jenkins (Students 1st/LDYS)

Which Gives the campaigning left (Respect/Isoc/Latin American Soc)Coalition 3 key Sabbs and 8 exec. The Indy left have 2 with Jeff and Emily (plus Bev and Sommervillie), Students 1st get just two. Matt Strong finishing 3rd for Comms as a leading NOLSies was a shock result with Gillet doing exceptionally well for a candidate with no real backing.

Excellent work... much better than I was expecting given your glumness about it on Thursday...

Yep, the left came out massively and made up the lost block vote numbers. So relieved its untrue.

Rob, I thought New Labour were good at spin; but this honestly is laughable. Any member of NOLS would be over the moon that independant lefties had got elected. We had ridiculous amounts in common with Meddeman and Randall. They were in our flyer packs and we knew that they were fantastic candidates.

Matts result was expected as you would know if you had asked. He ran the slate, which achieved us the overall goal, collectivism and all that.

Also, Haroon only just won by about 50 votes despite Gary doing not much. Hardly a show of strength.

When were we ever a NOLS union? By all intents and purposes, students 1st all but have control of council.

We thought this would take at least 3 years; but it is total turnaround in 1 year. Perhaps a referendum on the absolute joke that the union has been this year.

Ho ho! I like that. I almost think you actually believe what you're saying, so you might want to look at the results a little more closely.

Gen Sec: Respect/Fair Trade. Campaigns: Respect. Communications: Respect/Latin American Soc.

...that, unless I'm very much mistaken, is the big three. Woohoo!

Yeah, mate but all the power is with council and we have control. Take that.

god you've not been on council for a while have you. I remember trying to hold david and various SD editors to account over the years with 70% of council to no avail. And you don't all but control council we hold 51%....

Gillet had bits of the campaigns collective and only slightly more transfers from you then went to castro. tories transfering to an anarchist, boy you were desperate.

Um. I'm not a tory. Many of the tory croud are libertarians anyway, pro-immigration and pro-privacy etc.

As such they'd rather transfer to the anarchist, I should imagine.
